Michelle Obama surprises Oscars by presenting Best Picture award

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. first lady Michelle Obama made a surprise and unprecedented appearance on Sunday's Oscars telecast when she presented the award for Best Picture, the first time a president or first lady has ever presented an Academy Award.

Appearing live on screen from the White House in Washington, almost 3,000 miles from the Oscars ceremony in Hollywood, Obama praised the work of the movie industry before announcing the Iran hostage drama "Argo" the Best Picture winner.

Wearing a silver evening dress, Obama said this year's nominated films had "made us laugh, made us weep and grip our armrests just a little bit tighter."

Obama added: "They reminded us we can overcome any obstacles if we dig deep enough and hard enough. They are especially important for young people. Everyday they engage in the arts, they learn to open their imaginations ... and strive to reach those dreams."

"Argo" director and co-producer Ben Affleck said he felt like he was "sort of hallucinating" when Obama presented the award.

"The fact that it was the first lady was an enormous honor ... it was very cool," Affleck said backstage after collecting the Best Picture trophy.

Vatican blasts Italian media for 'false and damaging' reports

Osservatore Romano / Reuters

Pope Benedict XVI prays in a private chapel during the closing day of the Spiritual Exercises at the Vatican February 23, 2013.

By Philip Pullella, Reuters

The Vatican on Saturday accused the Italian media of spreading "false and damaging" reports in what it condemned as a deplorable attempt to influence cardinals who will meet in a secret conclave next month to elect a new pope.

Since Pope Benedict announced his resignation on February 11, Italian newspapers have been full of rumors about conspiracies, secret reports and lobbies in the Vatican that they say pushed the pope to abdicate.

"It is deplorable that, as we draw closer to the time of the beginning of the conclave ... that there be a widespread distribution of often unverified, unverifiable or completely false news stories that cause serious damage to persons and institutions," a Vatican statement said.

The Italian reports have painted an unflattering picture of the Vatican's central administration, known as the Curia, depicting it as being full of prelates more concerned with their careers than serving the Church or the pope.

Some Church officials, speaking privately, have said foreign cardinals coming to Rome to choose the next pope have been alarmed over reports of corruption and might be inclined to elect someone not connected with the Curia, which is predominantly Italian.

The Vatican statement said the Italian media reports were an attempt to influence the outcome of the conclave through negative public opinion much like states and kings tried to influence papal elections centuries ago.

The pope has announced that he will step down on February 28, becoming the first pontiff to abdicate in some six centuries.

The 85-year-old Benedict said his failing health no longer enabled him to run the 1.2-billion-member Roman Catholic Church as he would like.

In a separate statement, Father Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman, said the reports were trying to "discredit the Church and its government" ahead of the conclave.

Italy's Repubblica newspaper ran a series of unsourced stories this week about the alleged contents of a secret report prepared for the pope by a commission of three cardinals who investigated the so-called Vatileaks scandal last year.

Paolo Gabriele, the pope's butler, was convicted of stealing personal papal documents and leaking them to the media. He was jailed and later pardoned by the pope.

The documents alleged corruption in the Vatican and infighting over the running of its bank, which has been at the heart of a series of scandals in past decades.

On Friday the Vatican denied Italian media reports that Benedict's decision to send a senior official to a new post in Latin America was linked to the secret report about leaked papal papers.

The Vatican said the transfer to Colombia of Monsignor Ettore Balestrero, an Italian who holds a post roughly equivalent to deputy foreign minister, was a promotion and had been decided weeks ago. Balestrero will be promoted to archbishop and made ambassador in Bogota.

Those reports said Balestrero was being sent away from the Vatican because he figured in the secret report.

On Saturday, as part of his last activities before his resignation in five days, Benedict ended a week-long Lenten spiritual retreat in the Vatican and held a farewell meeting with Italy's president.

On Sunday he will hold his last Sunday blessing. He will hold his last general audience on Wednesday and meet with cardinals on Thursday morning before he resigns on Thursday.

He will first go to the papal summer retreat at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome and then move to a convent inside the Vatican in April after the building is renovated.

NRA vice president urges gun owners to stand up for rights

SALT LAKE CITY ? The National Rifle Association vice president spoke to more than a thousand people Saturday night, urging them to contact their representatives to protect their Second Amendment rights.

Wayne LaPierre, the Executive Vice President of the NRA, gave the keynote speech at the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo at the Salt Palace Convention Center. Recent mass shootings have renewed fierce debate on gun control, but LaPierre said the president's plan "demoniz(es) law-abiding gun owners." The crowd of 1,200 cheered for the leader, who pressed them to fight for their Second Amendment rights.

"As we sit here tonight, we are now facing the single most devastating attack on the Second Amendment that this country has ever seen," LaPierre said.

LaPierre has been criticized for his solution to tragedies like the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on Dec. 14 that left 20 children and six adults dead. The NRA has proposed placing armed police and security officers in every school.

Saturday, he repeated the proposal.

"There's not a mom or dad that wouldn't feel better when they dropped their kid off at school and saw a police car in the parking lot," LaPierre said. "There's not a mom or dad all over our country in America that doesn't want their children protected."

He also said the plan for universal background checks isn't reasonable, suggesting instead that the government more strictly enforce current gun control laws.

"Don't you be fooled. There is nothing universal" nor "reasonable' about (background checks)," LaPierre said. "This so-called "background check" is aimed at one thing registering your guns. When another tragic opportunity' presents itself, that registry will be used to confiscate your guns."

Isaac Holyoak with the Alliance For Better Utah says, the issues isn't about the Second Amendment, but about increasing public safety.

"Buying a gun should be at least as hard as getting a driver's license," Holyoak said.

Currently, federal law doesn't require background checks for private sales, like sales at gun shows. A handful of states have taken action to close the so-called "Gun Show Loophole," and Holyoak said those states see significantly lower rates of suicide and violence against women with handguns.

"Utah has a high suicide rate. If we want to prevent suicides in Utah, perform background checks," Holyoak said.

X Factor?s George Shelley reveals that he was almost put in MK1 & District 3 before Union J!

February 23rd, 2013 by Lisa McGarry.

george shelley blonde

George Shelley entered the X Factor as a solo singer last year and bosses were so sure that they wanted him, they tried to shoe horn him into three different bands he has revealed.

The young hunk is now a happy member of Union J and is currently touring the UK with the boyband, who made it as far as the semi final and to fourth place in the last series of the show.

The band are also working on their debut album, after landing a record deal but George could very easily have been in any other one of the groups who made the live shows he has revealed.

Bosses originally wanted to place him in MK1 and while Sim may have welcomed the distinctly un-urban singer into their band, Charlie was having none of it.

MK1 Simeon, Charlie

?The media made out I was forced into [Union J], but I wasn?t,? George told We Love Pop. ?The X Factor producers wanted to put me in MK1, but Charlie, the female singer in that band, wouldn?t let me.?

?She didn?t think I?d fit in. So the producers said I could either go in GMD3 or Triple J.?

We think Georgey Porgy chose well and much as we love District 3 (who started out as GMD3) it?s fair to say that Union J have had more success both on the series and after it concluded.

union j comic relief

Jaymi Hensley said they were comfortable with their new bandmate from the word go and insisted:

?When they suggested it, it made sense as we?d even spotted George at boot camp and asked him to sing for us.?

?The rest of us had only known each other for about a month when Jaymi applied for the X Factor. So when George came along it wasn?t a big deal as we were literally all so new to each other anyway.?

Union J are back in London this week, for a string of sell out concerts in Wembley. They?re pretty chuffed to be back in the capital and JJ tweeted this morning saying:

Union J

?Looking forward to performing two shows at wembley today. Have a runny nose tho praying it holds off on stage haha JJx?

Josh said:

?So excited for wembley!!!!!!!!!!!!! Josh x?

Can you imagine Union J without George? Do you think he made the right choice? Leave your comments below?.

Possible Washington state connection in shooting and multi-vehicle crash in Las Vegas Thursday | Breaking News

By KATHERINE SMITH

February 22, 2013 ? Updated 9:38 PM?

Sandi Sutton, a resident of Maple Valley, was identified by the Clark County Coroner's office in Las Vegas as one of the victims of the shooting and subsequent car crash which happened in the early morning hours of Feb. 21 on Las Vegas Boulevard, the city's center of gaming known as The Strip.

Sutton was a passenger in a taxi cab that was struck by a Maserati at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Las Vegas Boulevard. According to Officer Jose Hernandez in the public information office of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, the taxi exploded and caught fire, trapping Sutton and the driver. Both Sutton and the driver died at the scene.

"This morning occupants of a black Range Rover opened fire on the occupants of a Maserati," LVMPD Sheriff Douglas Gillespie said at a news conference on Thursday. "The Maserati driver, having been shot, sped through the intersection of Flamingo and Las Vegas Boulevard, colliding with a taxi cab and causing a six car accident. The driver and passenger of the taxi both died on the scene when the car exploded due to the impact."

Police believe that the altercation between the drivers of the Range Rover and Maserati began in the valet area of a nearby resort, the Aria Hotel and Casino, after which both vehicles began traveling northbound on Las Vegas Boulevard. After colliding with the taxi, the Maserati also struck four other vehicles, Hernandez said in a phone interview on Friday. The driver and passenger of the Maserati both suffered gunshot wounds and were transported to a local hospital where the driver, Kenneth Cherry Jr., died of his injuries. Three people from the other vehicles in the crash were also transported to the hospital.

Sutton grew up in Maple Valley and graduated from Tahoma High School in 1982. She is survived by her husband, James Wasmund, and their three children, Austin, Sarah, and Hunter.

Sutton was also a local business owner, and an active member of the Greater Maple Valley-Black Diamond Chamber of Commerce and the Maple Valley Rotary. Together she and her husband owned All Service Plumbing and she was also co-owner of The Dazzled Dame with Leih Mulvihill. The store had recently moved to a new location in Maple Valley Town Center about a month ago. Sutton and Mulvihill were in Las Vegas together, attending a business convention.

"I honestly can't remember what year we met," said longtime friend Tina McDonough. "The thing that drew me to her was that I'm highly involved in Susan G. Komen and she (Sutton) was a two time survivor. We've always been on the same team to find a cure."

Sutton had participated in Race for the Cure 5k with the local team Touched by Jeanie. Last year Sutton also participated in the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk for a Cure with Valley Girls and Guys, a team McDonough founded.

"2012 was her first time walking the 3-Day with us and she immediately signed up for this year," McDonough said. "We've done a lot of stuff together?just a big heart, big smile. (She was) really well known and well liked in the community. Just an amazing person and friend. She's left a hole in this community and our hearts. She's going to be forever missed."

Britain's first Oscar-winning animator Bob Godfrey dies at 91

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's first Oscar-winning animator Bob Godfrey, whose work ranged from the children's TV cartoon "Roobarb" to mock-erotic movies like "Kama Sutra Rides Again", has died aged 91, his family told the BBC on Friday.

Godfrey, often referred to as "The Godfather of British Animation", was born in Australia but educated in England and started his career as a graphic artist in London in the 1930s before gaining work in the film industry.

He was the first British animator to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for his 1975 musical comedy "Great", about civil engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Godfrey was nominated three other times for Oscars, including for his 1971 short film "Kama Sutra Rides Again", one of his mock-erotic exploitation films that focused on the hypocrisy of British attitudes towards sex.

Filmmaker Stanley Kubrick so admired the film that he screened it alongside UK showings of "A Clockwork Orange".

"Much of Godfrey's work has been predicated on satirizing the foibles and minutiae of what it means to be 'British'," said his biography on the British Film Institute website.

For nearly 50 years Godfrey worked with some of animation's biggest names including Monty Python's Terry Gilliam, poking fun at orthodoxy and establishment thinking. He retired in 1999.

His work ran along two tracks - adult material and quirky children's cartoons which he wanted to appeal to adults too.

He was known for his children's cartoons "Roobarb", about a warring cat and dog, and "Henry's Cat".

His death comes after the death on Sunday of veteran actor Richard Briers, aged 79, who narrated "Roobarb" and also the character of Brunel in Godfrey's film "Great".

Aardman Animations studio founder Peter Lord tweeted: "Dear old Bob Godfrey is no more. A great influence and inspiration to me and my generation of animators. Also a lovely bloke."

In an interview with the Guardian in 2001, Godfrey said he had one professional regret.

"I'd love to have done a full-length feature but I can't seem to stretch myself to that length," he told the newspaper.

"When you look at my films, they appear to be a series of 30-second commercials cut together. I'm a short distance man whether I like it or not."

Toxic mice airdrop aims to wipe out island's snakes

Eric Talmadge / AP

A brown tree snake is held by U.S. Department of Agriculture wildlife specialist Tony Salas outside his office on Andersen Air Force Base on Guam. There may be 2 million of the reptiles on the island.

By Eric Talmadge, The Associated Press

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- Dead mice laced with painkillers are about to rain down on Guam's jungle canopy. They are scientists' prescription for a headache that has caused the tiny U.S. territory misery for more than 60 years: the brown tree snake.

Most of Guam's native bird species are extinct because of the snake, which reached the island's thick jungles by hitching rides from the South Pacific on U.S. military ships shortly after World War II.

There may be 2 million of the reptiles on Guam now, decimating wildlife, biting residents and even knocking out electricity by slithering onto power lines.

More than 3,000 miles away, environmental officials in Hawaii have long feared a similar invasion ? which in their case likely would be a "snakes on a plane" scenario.

That would cost the state many vulnerable species and billions of dollars, but the risk will fall if Guam's airdrop strategy succeeds.

"We are taking this to a new phase," said Daniel Vice, assistant state director of U.S. Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Services in Hawaii, Guam, and the Pacific Islands. "There really is no other place in the world with a snake problem like Guam."

Brown tree snakes are generally a few feet long but can grow to be more than 10 feet in length.

Defenseless birds
Most of Guam's native birds were defenseless against the nocturnal, tree-based predators, and within a few decades of the reptile's arrival, nearly all of them were wiped out.

The snakes can also climb power poles and wires, causing blackouts, or slither into homes and bite people, including babies.

They use venom on their prey, but it is not lethal to humans.

The infestation and the toll it has taken on native wildlife have tarnished Guam's image as a tourism haven, though the snakes are rarely seen outside their jungle habitat.

The solution to this headache, fittingly enough, is acetaminophen, the active ingredient in painkillers including Tylenol.

The strategy takes advantage of the snake's two big weaknesses. Unlike most snakes, brown tree snakes are happy to eat prey they didn't kill themselves, and they are highly vulnerable to acetaminophen, which is harmless to humans.

The upcoming mice drop is targeted to hit snakes near Guam's sprawling Andersen Air Force Base, which is surrounded by heavy foliage and if compromised would offer the snakes a potential ticket off the island. Using helicopters, the dead neonatal mice will be dropped by hand, one by one.

U.S. government scientists have been perfecting the mice-drop strategy for more than a decade with support from the Department of Defense and the Department of the Interior.

Streamers
To keep the mice bait from dropping all the way to the ground, where it could be eaten by other animals or attract insects as they rot, researchers have developed a device with streamers designed to catch in the branches of the forest foliage, where the snakes live and feed.

Experts say the impact on other species will be minimal, particularly since the snakes have themselves wiped out the birds that might have been most at risk.

"One concern was that crows may eat mice with the toxicant," said William Pitt, of the U.S. National Wildlife Research Center's Hawaii Field Station. "However, there are no longer wild crows on Guam."

The mouse drop is set to start in April or May.

A 2010 study conducted by the National Wildlife Research Center found brown tree snakes would cause between $593 million and $2.14 billion in economic damage each year if they became established in Hawaii like they are on Guam.

Power outages would cause the most damage, followed by a projected decline in tourism. The cost of treating snake bites would account for a small share.

Native Hawaiian birds "literally don't know what to do when they see a snake coming," said Christy Martin, a spokeswoman for the Coordinating Group on Alien Pest Species, a partnership of Hawaii government agencies and private organizations.

"Once we get snakes here, we're never going to be able to fix the situation," Martin said.?

HBT: Price backtracks on facial hair comment

David Price backtracks on his comments yesterday that he wouldn?t play for the Yankees because of their rule against beards:

?It probably wasn?t the best thing to say, but I didn?t mean anything by it,? Price said. ?I wasn?t looking to offend the Yankees.?It?s probably the best organization in all of sports. Not just baseball, but all of sports.?I didn?t mean anything (against) the New York Yankees. I?ve had friends on that team for multiple years.?

Dead Space 3 (Xbox 360)

Dead Space 3 once again puts you in the shoes of Isaac Clarke, who is called on by Captain Robert Norton and John Carver to help rescue Ellie, the woman he fell in love with in Dead Space 2. Clarke's plunged into battle against Unitology soldiers and, soon enough, Necromorphs, (reanimated dead human corpses infected with an alien disease). Packed with side missions, intense action, and strategic gameplay, Dead Space 3 will keep you on the edge of your seat?if you can overlook the game's repetitiveness and fetch quests. Dead Space 3 is available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC; I played on the Xbox 360.

The Story
Dead Space 3 starts off with you needing to save the damsel in distress. In this case, it's Ellie Langford, Clarke's former love and Captain Norton's current one. As soon as you realize that Ellie and Norton are romantically involved, it becomes apparent that at some point Clarke and Norton are going to have a dispute over the girl. From that point on, Dead Space 3 becomes a series of repetitive events that see fetching items for the group while trying to defeat the zombie alien race. If you can look past the clich?d love plot, Dead Space 3 is a lot of fun.

Solo and Co-Op Gameplay
The solo campaign feels less like a horror game and more like an action-thriller with subtle hints of horror. There were a number of times when I would turn the corner, expecting to see Necromorphs, but found myself in an empty corridor. I anticipated more horror and the game didn't deliver. That said, Dead Space 3's music is eerie and low-light environments are good for a chill every so often. Likewise, walls featuring blood-written messages ("All is lost," "Cut off the limbs," "Lies," etc.) add to the creepy factor. But it's not creepy enough.

The drop-in/drop-out online co-op campaign strips away even more frights, but it adds more side missions that enhance the gameplay experience. It also includes several action sequences that you won't find in the solo campaign, which increases the game's overall value.

No Limbs For You
"Strategic dismemberment" is the primary combat technique against Necromorphs. It makes combat challenging as you have to react quickly and aim accurately in order to get past these alien monstrosities, which makes this game all the more enjoyable. Unlike Call of Duty, where you can shoot at someone's chest and somehow manage to get a headshot, Dead Space 3 requires a little more accuracy and skill to kill enemies. One shot is not enough to kill most Necromorphs, so you have to think on your feet.

Two abilities that come in handy are kinesis and stasis. Kinesis, a module attached to the RIG (Resource Integration Gear) that gives you the ability to suspend and handle objects via artificial gravity field, helps when fighting enemies and it doesn't require replenishment. Impaling your opponent suddenly becomes a lot more exciting. The stasis module temporarily slows down the motion of an object or enemy, giving you time to run away or solve a puzzle.

Likewise, the stomp action never got old. Time and time again, after killing off another enemy I looked forward to the crunching noise as my foot crushed their lifeless bodies. It was an incredibly satisfying feeling, especially after replaying the same checkpoint five times before I was able to figure out what it was I had to do.

Sweet! Look What I Found!
Weapon customization continues to be one of the most innovative game elements. The upgrade system gives players the opportunity to craft weapons to their specific tastes. After upgrading my gun at one of the many workbenches conveniently scattered throughout the game, I would head off to face alien zombies, eager to try out the new toy. Dead Space 3's weapon customization is one of the best I've experienced.

Dead Space 3, at times, feels like a scavenger as you need to find ammo, med packs, and weapon parts scattered. You can find resources everywhere ? along the walls, lockers, desks, and even in Necromorphs ? so before heading off to complete the next mission, run around the rooms and scour every corner. There's an upside to this; hunting for items adds extra tension as you have to make valuable upgrades in order to proceed to the next stage. Looting resources off the Necromorphs is pretty sweet, too, as it gave me an excuse to stomp their bodies to my heart's content.

The End?
Dead Space 3 has a clich?d storyline that ends on a cliffhanger, and some of the missions ask you to run too many errands, but it will please series fans. Co-op provides more side missions and action sequences than the solo campaign, so it's worth replaying with a buddy (in doing so, however, you miss the solo campaign's few real horror moments). Overall, I wouldn't play Dead Space 3 for the plotline, but it is worth picking up for the thrilling combat action and gameplay.

Samsung Galaxy S4 could replace your doctor, but it's running late

The Samsung Galaxy S4 will see you now, as reports suggest it will come equipped with a S Health app and accessory, but are processor woes forcing the Korean firm to delay the Galaxy S4 release?

S Health isn't a new invention with the Korean firm (quietly) launching the app and accompanying pad for use with the Galaxy S3, allowing users to monitor blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI, weight etc without a trip to the doctors.

Korean site Daum now reports the same set up will be heading to the upcoming Galaxy S4 and Samsung could make a bigger deal of it this time as the technology and been improved.

Snappy Dragon making S4 late

In other Galaxy S4 related news Barron's has spoken to an analyst (so take this with a sizable dosage of salt) who claims the flagship smartphone has been delayed due to problems with the Qualcomm made Snapdragon processor destined for the handset.

Apparently Samsung is lining up the ridiculously sized octo-core chipset for the Galaxy SIV, but power management issues has slowed down development.

Samsung Galaxy S4 - case leak
Who are you trying to kid here? Credit: MobileFun

Rounding off this Samsung Galaxy S4 sandwich is a highly dubious report from Mobile Fun which claims to have received leaked shots of protective cases for the new handset from a Chinese accessory manufacturer.

We're hardly sold on these shots and we reckon Samsung may employ a more dramatic design overhaul for the Galaxy SIV than the cases suggest, so let's not get carried away. OK?

We'd love to know what you make of all this, so why not leave us a comment below, tweet us @TR_Phones or leave your musings on our Facebook wall.

Three dead in car-to-car shooting on Las Vegas Strip

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Three people were killed and at least four others were hurt in a car-to-car shooting and crash early on Thursday on the Las Vegas Strip, police said.

A person in a black Range Rover Sport opened fire on a Maserati at about 4:20 a.m. (1220 GMT) as the cars traveled north in front of the Strip's Bellagio and Bally's casinos, said Officer Jose Hernandez, a police spokesman.

The Range Rover fled the scene.

The driver of the Maserati lost control of the car and crashed into a taxi, which burst into flames. The Maserati, which had a passenger, struck another four cars, he said.

The drivers of the Maserati and the taxi were killed, as was a passenger in the taxi. The Maserati passenger and three others were taken to a hospital.

There was no known motive for the shooting, Hernandez said. The Strip was partly shut down after the shooting.

Hernandez said police had received "quite a few" calls about the shooting, which meant there were multiple witnesses.

"The Strip is a busy place," he said. "It's truly a 24-hour town, and that means we'll get help with investigating this incident."

'Doubleheader' funeral service held for NY couple

CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. (AP) ? Norman Hendrickson was known for telling jokes and never wasting money. So when he died suddenly while en route to his wife's funeral, the couple's daughters knew there was only one thing to do: Hold a doubleheader service.

The 94-year-old World War II veteran's impromptu wake was held Saturday at the same eastern New York funeral home where his wife Gwen's funeral was already scheduled. She was 89 when she died on Feb. 8. After Norman died just steps from the funeral home, the daughters decided their parents would be mourned together at the same time.

The daughters said it was a fitting way to say goodbye to a couple who had been together since meeting in Europe during World War II and who had been married for nearly 66 years.

"After we had a little time to process the shock and horror, we felt we couldn't have written a more perfect script," Norma Howland told the Post-Star of Glens Falls (http://bit.ly/VL01Jx ). "My sister said the only thing he didn't do was fall into the casket."

Norman, a former assistant postmaster in Cambridge, 35 miles northeast of Albany, was being driven in a limousine to the Ackley and Ross Funeral Home for his wife's service when he stopped breathing. After the limo pulled up, funeral director Jim Gariepy, who is also the local coroner, and funeral home owner Elizabeth Nichols-Ross helped move Norman to the sidewalk outside the business.

Gariepy began CPR while Nichols-Ross and one Norman's sons-in-law raced across town to retrieve his do-not-resuscitate orders from the Hendricksons' refrigerator door. Once the orders were in hand, an emergency crew that had arrived ceased attempts to revive Norman. He died on the sidewalk.

Nichols-Ross said daughter Merrilyne Hendrickson then requested that her father's body be put into a casket and placed in the viewing room with her mother's cremated remains, which had been placed in an urn. Mourners who started arriving soon after for Gwen's funeral were greeted by a note Merrilyne posted at the entrance: "Surprise ? It's a double header ? Gwen and Norman Hendrickson ? Feb. 16, 2013."

Nichols-Ross said she didn't charge the family for Norman's wake. On his prayer card, she jokingly wrote that Hendrickson got the idea to die in the limo headed to the funeral so he could get "a buy-one-get-one-free deal."

"If it had happened with somebody else like this it would have been sad, but with Norm it wasn't," Nichols-Ross said. "It was just so much like Norm."

Norman was overseas with the U.S. Army when he met Gwen, who was serving in the British Royal Air Force. She immigrated to the U.S. and they were married in May 1947.

Howland said her parents had jokingly promised to never leave one spouse behind. After her mother died, Howland said she overheard her father say aloud, "We have had a good long life together. I love you. I'll miss you and watch for me."

Watch live: Vice President Joe Biden to speak today in Connecticut at conference on gun violence

DANBURY ? Vice President Joe Biden spoke Thursday at a gun violence conference a few miles from the scene of last year's Newtown school shooting massacre.

Watch live:?Connecticut Network is streaming video from the conference, which is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The conference, in Danbury, is to push President Barack Obama's gun control proposals. It was organized by members of the state's congressional delegation including U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who said the proximity to Newtown was of "symbolic significance."

"There will be people with enormous expertise speaking but also Connecticut and Newtown residents who have felt the full burden and brunt of this horrific tragedy," Blumenthal said.

Other officials including U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan also were scheduled to address the conference at Western Connecticut State University.

Obama is pushing for universal background checks for gun owners, a ban on military-style assault weapons and limiting the size of ammunition magazines.

There is a planned panel discussion on gun violence. A second panel was to discuss mental health and school safety initiatives.

Gun makers and lobbyists weren't invited to participate in the conference, but Blumenthal said gun rights advocates will have opportunities in hearings and other forums to express their points of view. Continued...

Meanwhile, the mother of a 7-year-old girl killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre urged lawmakers at the conference to pass meaningful laws to help prevent another tragedy, winning a standing ovation as officials vowed to act.

Chris and Lynn McDonnell, whose daughter Grace was among 20 first graders and six educators killed in December, spoke Thursday in Danbury.

"We ask our representatives to look into their hearts and remember the 26 beautiful lives we lost and pass meaningful laws to help prevent this from happening again," Lynn McDonnell said, sparking a standing ovation.

Chris McDonnell said he hoped the moral responsibility of gun owners would be discussed.

The conference at Western Connecticut State University is to push President Barack Obama's gun control proposals. It was organized by members of the state's congressional delegation.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy revealed his own gun control package ahead of his appearance at the conference. He said Thursday that he wants to immediately ban high-capacity ammunition magazines, require background checks for the transfer of any firearm and expand the state's assault weapons ban. The Democrat has expressed frustration with the pace of the state legislature's efforts to form a response to the Newtown tragedy.

The gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, killed his mother at their Newtown home before going to the school and slaughtering 20 children and six adults. He committed suicide as police arrived.

As a teenager, Lanza studied at Western Connecticut State, earning a 3.26 grade point average before taking his last class in the summer of 2009. Classmates remembered him as quiet, a trait some thought was a result of him being younger than his peers.

Obama is pushing for universal background checks for gun owners, a ban on many military-style weapons and a limit on the size of magazines.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who organized the conference with two other members of the state's congressional delegation, said those measures are achievable. He said the Newtown shooting dramatically changed the prospects for gun control. Continued...

"Two months ago gun violence and measures to stop it were untouchable," Blumenthal said. "The forces of resistance as strong as they once appeared are a shadow of what they were."

A second panel was to discuss mental health and school safety initiatives.

Malloy, Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra, state police Capt. Dale Hourigan and the mayors of Bridgeport and Hartford planned to participate, along with other experts in the fields of mental health, law enforcement and education.

Gun makers and lobbyists weren't invited to participate in the conference, but Blumenthal said gun rights advocates will have opportunities in hearings and other forums to express their points of view.

Cure for common hangover? 'Pill' mimics action of human liver in fighting alcohol intoxication

Feb. 20, 2013 ? In a discovery that could promise a quick fix to the common hangover, a team of researchers led by UCLA engineers has identified a method for speeding up the body's reaction to the consumption of alcohol.

In a paper published online Feb. 17 in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Nanotechnology, Yunfeng Lu, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, and his colleagues describe successfully placing two complementary enzymes in a tiny capsule to speed up the elimination of alcohol from the body. The enzyme combination within the capsule essentially processes alcohol the way the liver does.

Lu, the principal investigator, said the enzyme combination could be ingested as a pill, chemically altering alcohol in the digestive system, even as the liver does its work.

"The pill acts in a way extremely similar to the way your liver does," Lu said. "With further research, this discovery could be used as a preventative measure or antidote for alcohol intoxication."

Naturally occurring enzymes within cells often work in tandem to transform molecules or eliminate toxins. Lu's group assembled multiple enzymes to mimic the natural process. An enzyme known as an alcohol oxidase, for example, can promote the oxidization of alcohol but also produces hydrogen peroxide, which is toxic. Another type of enzyme, a catalase, prompts the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. Placing the two enzymes next to each other can effectively remove alcohol.

The researchers placed the two enzymes in a polymer capsule measuring just tens of nanometers in diameter. The wall of the polymer capsule is only one nanometer thick -- about 100,000 times thinner than a strand of human hair. The capsule protects the enzymes and allows them to freely enter an alcohol molecule. In this way, the nanocapsule mimics an organelle, a structure found in cells that spurs chemical reactions.

The researchers used a mouse model to test how well the enzyme package worked as an antidote after alcohol was consumed. They found that blood alcohol levels in mice that received the enzyme package fell more quickly than in mice that did not. Blood alcohol levels of the antidote test group were 15.8 percent lower than the control group after 45 minutes, 26.1 percent lower after 90 minutes and 34.7 percent lower after three hours.

In a test of how well the enzyme delivery system worked as a prophylactic when consumed at the same time as alcohol, the researchers found that blood alcohol levels in the mice that received the enzymes were 10.1 percent lower than in control-group mice after 45 minutes, 31.8 percent lower after 90 minutes and 36.8 percent lower after three hours.

"Considering the vast library of enzymes that are currently or potentially available," the authors write, "novel classes of enzyme nanocomplexes could be built for a broad range of applications."

The study's lead authors included Yang Liu and Juanjuan Du of UCLA Engineering's chemical and biomolecular engineering department.

Additional authors of the research include Wei Wei of UCLA Engineering; Ming Yan of UCLA Engineering and the UCLA Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics; Mo Yin Lau, Jay Hu, Hui Han and Cheng Ji of the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California; Dr. Otto O. Yang of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA; Sheng Liang and Hui Wang of Xinhua Hospital, affiliated with China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University; Jianmin Li and Wei Chen of China's Beijing Institute of Biotechnology; Xinyuan Zhu of Shanghai Jiao Tong University; and Linqi Shi of China's Ministry of Education and Nankai University.

The research was partially supported by the Defense Threat Reducing Agency, the National Institutes of Health, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the National Basic Research Program of China.

Can A New Electric Toothbrush Really Get Your Teeth Cleaner?

The Sonicare has been the gold standard of teeth cleaning for years. Now, the Oral B Deep Sweep says it ?removes up to 76% more plaque than the Sonicare FlexCare in hard to reach places.? But is one toothbrush really that much better than another?

The Test
First, please know that I am not a dentist, nor do I have the proper instruments required to do a truly scientific test. So lawyers, take note: my results are really my subjective opinions. That said, here?s what I do to make the test as fair as possible in the comfort of my own bathroom:

I chew up those dental dye tablets ? the kind your dentist uses to reveal areas where you haven?t brushed so well. Then I brush one side of my mouth with the Sonicare, for exactly 30 seconds each on top and bottom, then I brush the other side of my mouth for exactly the same time with the Oral B Deep Sweep.

Subjective Differences
The Oral B seems to facilitate more movement of the bristles, the Sonicare feels like higher frequency, smaller vibrations. The Sonicare was a little more tickly than the lower frequency Oral B. The Oral B was heavier and the brush head was bigger than the Sonicare. I like the feel of the Oral B a little better.

The Results
Which gets my teeth cleaner? When I look in the mirror, I don?t see any dye remaining. So I have my producer and editor make a careful inspection. And neither of them notice any difference between the cleaning efficacy of the devices either.

Test #2
This test, I definitely don?t recommend you do yourself: I rub fluorescent paste ? the kind that shows up under black light ? all over my teeth and into the crevices. The paste really shows up under the black light so maybe we?ll see some that the toothbrushes don?t clean. I brush each of the four quadrants of my mouth with one of the devices, for exactly 30 seconds each. And again, upon close inspection, the teeth all look similarly clean.

Finally, to gauge how much value these high end toothbrushes really offer, I repeat the test, comparing the $129 Sonicare and the $139 Deep Sweep to a $9 Arm & Hammer Spin Brush, and to a regular, manual toothbrush. They, too, did a good job removing the dye.

Conclusions
I really wish that my tests had indicated one brush was significantly different that the other. But my simple dye tests reveled no glaring contrasts. While that doesn?t prove in any way that the toothbrushes are the same, I can tell you that both left my teeth feeling clean. While it was cleaning, I liked the feel of the Oral B the best; it seemed to do a lot of the brushing work for me. The Oral B comes with a separate timer that encourages you to brush a full 30 seconds for each of the four quadrants of your mouth. The Sonicare does the same with beeps, but the little timer device from Oral B was a nice visual nudge to keep brushing. One thing I did like better about the Sonicare- it left my gums feeling a bit tinglier (is that a word?), but you get the idea; the gums got a bit more stimulated from my experience.

But paying $139 for any toothbrush is a lot, and I don?t believe that you really need to spend that much to get your teeth clean, as long as you brush properly and floss to get in the spaces that no brush can reach.

Genetic variation controls predation: Benefits of being a mosaic

Feb. 18, 2013 ? A genetically mosaic Eucalyptus tree is able to control which leaves are saved from predation because of alterations in its genes, finds an study published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Plant Biology. Between two leaves of the same tree there can be many genetic differences -- this study found ten SNP, including ones in genes that regulate terpene production, which influence whether or not a leaf is edible.

Organisms collect somatic genetic mutations throughout their lives. These mutations may have no effect or they may occur in genes important to how the cell behaves. Cancer cells often have genetic mutations which permit the cell to divide more times than an unmutated cell, and in plants it is somatic mutation which allows a single tree to produce both nectarines and peaches.

Researchers from the Australian National University found that in the long-lived Eucalyptus tree (Eucalyptus melliodora ) somatic mutation is also responsible for their interesting ability to produce some branches with leaves that are readily predated, while others are pest resistant.

At a genetic level there were ten genes which contained differences between these leaves. Amanda Padovan, who led this project, explained, "The main defence against predation of Eucalyptus is a cocktail of terpene oils, including monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and FPCs, which give the tree its distinctive smell. Leaves which were resistant to predation had five fewer monoterpenes and nine fewer sesquiterpenes than the tastier leaves. However the concentration of FPCs and the remaining monoterpenes was far higher -- so it seems that these mutations reduce the tight control over terpene production."

While this loss of control probably has a high evolutionary cost, it allows the tree to survive the insect-plant war. The tree investigated had one branch which was untouched by insects when the rest of the tree was completely defoliated.

U.S. added 147 megawatts of geothermal energy in 2012

California leads the rest of the country

Geothermal power has a promising future, but so far it has lagged behind most of its other renewable energy cousins, especially wind and solar. So while wind power in the US has grown by 13.2 gigawatts in 2012, with 5.5 gigawatts of that just in December, geothermal's growth is more modest. According to the Geothermal Energy Association, the U.S. added 147.05 MW of gross geothermal power capacity in 2012, which is 5% more than in 2011.

That might not seem like much, but geothermal power has very desirable attributes that make it worth developing further; unlike wind and solar, it generates power 24/7 regardless of the weather. It's true that there are many ways to mitigate the intermittency of wind and solar, including possibly with grid-scale liquid-metal batteries, but having some nice clean baseload power in the mix will always be a good thing. Now the trick is to reduce costs, and to make sure we understand the geology properly to avoid problems.

Projects and new additions that came online in 2012 include:

  • John L. Featherstone Plant (CA): Energy Source, 49.9 MW
  • McGinness Hills (NV): Ormat, 30 MW
  • Neal Hot Springs (OR): U.S. Geothermal, 30.1 MW
  • San Emidio I (NV): U.S. Geothermal, 12.75 MW
  • Tuscarora (NV): Ormat, 18 MW
  • Dixie Valley I (NV): Terra-Gen, 6.2 MW

How a battle over soybeans made it to the Supreme Court

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Vernon Hugh Bowman seems comfortable with the old way of doing things, right down to the rotary-dial telephone he said he was using in a conference call with reporters.

But the 75-year-old Indiana farmer figured out a way to benefit from a high-technology product, soybeans that are resistant to weed-killers, without always paying the high price that such genetically engineered seeds typically bring. In so doing, he ignited a legal fight with seed-giant Monsanto Co. that has now come before the Supreme Court, with argument taking place Tuesday.

The court case poses the question of whether Bowman's actions violated the patent rights held by Monsanto, which developed soybean and other seeds that survive when farmers spray their fields with the company's Roundup brand weed-killer. The seeds dominate American agriculture, including in Indiana where more than 90 percent of soybeans are Roundup Ready.

Monsanto has attracted a bushel of researchers, universities and other agribusiness concerns to its side because they fear a decision in favor of Bowman would leave their own technological innovations open to poaching. The company's allies even include a company that is embroiled in a separate legal battle with Monsanto over one of the patents at issue in the Bowman case.

The Obama administration also backs Monsanto, having earlier urged the court to stay out of the case because of the potential for far-reaching implications for patents involving DNA molecules, nanotechnologies and other self-replicating technologies.

Monsanto's opponents argue that the company has tried to use patent law to control the supply of seeds for soybeans, corn, cotton, canola, sugar beets and alfalfa. The result has been a dramatic rise in seed prices and reduced options for farmers, according to the Center for Food Safety. The group opposes the spread of genetically engineered crops and says their benefits have been grossly overstated.

"It has become extremely difficult for farmers to find high-quality conventional seeds," said Bill Freese, the center's science policy analyst.

Consumer groups and organic food producers have fought Monsanto over genetically engineered farm and food issues in several settings. They lost a campaign in California last year to require labels on most genetically engineered processed foods and produce. Monsanto and other food and chemical companies spent more than $40 million to defeat the ballot measure.

Monsanto says the success of its seeds are proof of their value. By and large, "farmers appreciate what we do," David Snively, Monsanto's top lawyer, said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Herbicide-resistant soybean seeds first hit the market in 1996. To protect its investment in their development, Monsanto has a policy that prohibits farmers from saving or reusing the seeds once the crop is grown. Farmers must buy new seeds every year.

Like almost every other farmer in Indiana. Bowman used the patented seeds for his main crop. But for a risky, late season crop on his 300 acres in Sandborn, about 100 miles southwest of Indianapolis, Bowman said, "I wanted a cheap source of seed."

He couldn't reuse his own beans or buy seeds from other farmers who had similar agreements with Monsanto and other companies licensed to sell genetically engineered seeds. And dealers he used to buy cheap seed from no longer carry the unmodified seeds.

So Bowman found what looked like a loophole and went to a grain elevator that held soybeans it typically sells for feed, milling and other uses, but not as seed.

Bowman reasoned that most of those soybeans also would be resistant to weed killers, as they initially came from herbicide-resistant seeds, too. He was right, and he repeated the practice over eight years.

He didn't try to keep it a secret from Monsanto and in October 2007, the company sued him for violating its patent. Bowman's is one of 146 lawsuits Monsanto has filed since 1996 claiming unauthorized use of its Roundup Ready seeds, Snively said.

A federal court in Indiana sided with Monsanto and awarded the company $84,456 for Bowman's unlicensed use of Monsanto's technology. The federal appeals court in Washington that handles all appeals in patent cases, upheld the award. The appeals court said that farmers may never replant Roundup Ready seeds without running afoul of Monsanto's patents.

The Supreme Court will grapple with the limit of Monsanto's patent rights, whether they stop with the sale of the first crop of beans, or extend to each new crop soybean farmers grow that has the gene modification that allows it to withstand the application of weed-killer.

The company sees Bowman's actions as a threat both to its Roundup Ready line of seeds and to other innovations that could be easily and cheaply reproduced if they were not protected.

"This case really is about 21st century technologies," Snively said.

Bowman and his allies say Monsanto's legal claims amount to an effort to bully farmers.

The Center for Food Safety's Freese points out that Monsanto's biggest moneymaker is corn seed, which cannot be replanted. "So seed-saving would have no impact on the majority of Monsanto's seed revenue," he said.

The case is Bowman v. Monsanto Co., 11-796.
