Movie Review: A Secret Affair ? The Birth of Damnation

Mistress-themed films are the current fad in local pop culture. There is nothing original in the idea ? like most fads; it is experiencing some sort of renaissance. Older movies dealing with infidelities feature the usual trifecta: the patient (or stupid) wife, the caring (or opportunistic) mistress and the misunderstood (or as*hole) husband. The current crop of movies still includes the same set of classic characters. Some people are complaining though that the torrent of mistress-themed films nibble on the moral fibers of our social relations. I am not a self-righteous moralistic nagger so am not one to believe their fire-and-brim sermons. However, I do think filmmakers should place a quota on the number of mistress-themed film releases, not for moral reasons, but for creative purposes. The dearth of imagination continues to pervade mainstream filmdom. This movie just might push it closer to creative blackhole.

I think CRISTINE REYES did not make the cast because she has a full schedule. Good for her.

I think DEREK RAMSAY makes movies to flaunt his tattoos. His recent career choices make him Eddie Rodriguez 2.0 ? the original King of Love Triangles ? but with lesser dramatic skill set.

I think ANNE CURTIS has proven that she has had enough of cute roles and out to make more mature stuff. But please be advised that mature characters do not NECESSARILY mean spiteful wives and scheming mistresses.

I think ANDI EIGENMANN is fortunate to still receive project offers despite the controversies she figured in the recent past. I also think she is a sensible enough to charter the course of her career better. In a manner of speaking, her role in this movie announces her departure from sweet roles. We heard it loud and clear so please take a different one next time.

I think JACKLYN JOSE deserves something better ? much better ? in her next screen project. (She figured in one of the b*tchiest and funniest scene in the film. The fact that she was still able to make this screen clutter a wee bit watchable is a testament to her enormous talent.)

I think JACKIELOU BLANCO is a forgotten actress and this film does not help her cause.

I think the movie features the MOST IRKSOME SET OF BARKADA ever. The combination of overdone colegiala accents and obvious hair relaxation procedures is a full-on aural and visual assault.

I think the scenes depicting the SOCIAL MEDIA TUSSLE of the lead characters are futile attempts to make commentaries on the destructive effects of social networking sites to human relationships.

I think A SECRET AFFAIR aspires to replicate the success of NO OTHER WOMAN and even if the intention was not verbalized, it is apparent as each scene unfolds. It is not improper to follow movie trends for box-office purposes; after all, movie-making is also a business. But filmmakers should at least make an effort to improve the trend. (Or start another trend.) Some people think A SECRET AFFAIR is better than NO OTHER WOMAN ? not true. First, NO OTHER WOMAN is not a first-rate film. The characters are one-dimensional, the plot is ridiculous and the ending is terrible. A SECRET AFFAIR has the same elements that made NO OTHER WOMAN successful (b*tchiness and campiness) and dreadful (one-dimensional characters, ridiculous plot) but with a more subdued conclusion. Second, A SECRET AFFAIR is the clone in this equation and second-rate materials are seldom decent. A second-rate duplicate of a substandard original portends dire results.?? ?

The latest European hurricane forecasting model (ECMWF) shows the predicted track of hurricane Sandy coming into closer agreement with the US Global Forecast System (GFS).

The ECMWF model was showing a more southern track for Sandy, with landfall occurring on Monday afternoon. Now, the European model shows Sandy on a more northward track with the center of the storm coming ashore at New Jersey early Tuesday morning.

If you look at the 2 p.m. EDT Friday National Hurricane Center's forecast track for Sandy, the European supercomputers predict Sandy will land at the northern part of the cone (see below).

Bear in mind, meteorologists stress that beyond 24 hours, the accuracy of these models becomes less certain. And this is one of the more complex storm systems, with many moving parts, which could alter Sandy's track. For example, if the blocking high pressure area in the northern Atlantic moves off sooner than predicted, Sandy wouldn't hang a left toward the East Coast. But most forecasts predict the high to force Sandy to turn toward the coast.

Hurricane Sandy, which according to the AP has so far left 39 people dead in the Caribbean, is shaping up to be a big deal. The Monitor's Ron Scherer quotes forecasters warning of widespread flooding, storm surges, snow in the Appalachians, and heavy wind damage from the slow-moving storm.

Weather Underground's Jeff Masters says that the storm is "likely to be a billion-dollar disaster." At AccuWeather, meteorologist Joe Lundberg writes that if Sandy makes landfall near Long Island or northern New Jersey, which he says is the most likely scenario, it would be "an economic and human disaster on multiple levels."

Another meteorologist described Sandy in even more colorful terms: A blog post by AccuWeather's?Senior Vice President Mike Smith quotes a Facebook post from a "very prominent and respected National Weather Service meteorologist," which reads:?"I've never seen anything like this and I'm at a loss for expletives to describe what this storm could do."

Both Virginia and Maryland? have declared states of emergency ahead of the storm, and voluntary evacuation orders have been issued for New Jersey's Cape May County, the Garden State's southernmost county. ?

There are a lot of moving parts to this weather system, meaning that the computer models could be inaccurate and Sandy could fizzle. But if you live on the East Coast between Virginia and Maine, it's worth it to stock up on batteries and water, and to make a straightforward evacuation plan. Check the Monitor's list of hurricane preparedness tips for specifics.

Sandy is just a Category 1 hurricane (74-95 mph winds). What's all the fuss?

The short answer: Storm surge over a wide area, over a sustained period.

Aside from the hybrid mega-storm aka Frankenstorm stuff that we've cited below, there's the sheer size of Sandy. She's big. Sandy's got some girth, and she's expected to get bigger.

Sandy has grown in size every day, with tropical storm force winds now extending 275 miles? from the center. But Monday or Tuesday, there are forecasts that indicate Sandy could have strong winds 400 miles from her center.

The 11 a.m. EDT National Hurricane Center report showed some slowing of her speed, and her winds aren't getting stronger. And Sandy's a little less "organized." But her reach is growing. Rather than high winds in tight, her 80 mph winds are reaching out further. That's part of the concern among meteorologists.

High winds will keep the storm surge threat high. "This large wind field will likely drive a storm surge of 3 - 6 feet on Monday and Tuesday to the right of where the center makes landfall, on the mid-Atlantic or New York coasts. These storm surge heights will be among the highest ever recorded along the affected coasts, and will have the potential to cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage," writes? Dr. Jeff Masters at Weather Underground.com

Dr. Masters goes on to write:

"The latest H*Wind analysis from NOAA's Hurricane Research Division put the destructive potential of Sandy's winds at 2.1 on a scale of 0 to 6, and the destructive potential of the storm surge much higher, at 4.2 on a scale of 0 to 6. The full moon is on Monday, which means astronomical tides will be at their peak for the month, increasing potential storm surge flooding. With Sandy's strongest winds expected to last at least 12 hours near the time of landfall, the peak storm surge will affect the coast for at least one high tide cycle, and possibly two. This will greatly increase the potential for storm surge damage and coastal erosion. If Sandy hits Long Island, as the GFS (Global Forcast System) model predicts, the storm surge will be capable of over-topping the flood walls in Manhattan and flooding portions of the New York City subway system."

Friday Oct. 26 12:55 p.m.

Gov. Martin O'Malley is declaring a state of emergency across Maryland as Hurricane Sandy approaches, the Associated Press reports.

O'Malley said Friday the declaration gives the state flexibility to activate the Maryland National Guard and provide assistance to local emergency managers. He says everyone should prepare for extreme weather by reviewing their family emergency plans, checking their emergency supplies staying informed.

Heavy rain and high winds are expected to reach the Maryland coast Saturday night. Forecasters predict several days of foul weather including the possibility of snow in the western Maryland mountains.

Friday Oct. 26 12:40 p.m.

Why is Sandy a 'Frankenstorm'? There's more to the moniker than a hurricane arriving just ahead of Halloween.

Hurricane Sandy is a tropical cyclone. But computer models say it's on a collision course with a "extratropical trough" - a low-pressure storm system associated with the jet stream.

A tropical cyclone gets its energy from warm water. So, under normal circumstances, Hurricane Sandy would lose energy as it moved north and came ashore on the East Coast.

But the computer models say that won't happen this time. In this rare case, Sandy will meet up with an "extratropical trough" which draws energy not from the surface temperatures but from the temperature differential between the cold polar air and warm tropical air. The jet stream itself "is tightly coupled to that temperature contrast. The contrast in temperatures between air masses is ultimately what drives the jet stream, and the stronger the temperature contrast, the stronger the jet stream will be," explains Adam Sobel an atmospheric scientist and a professor at Columbia University.

The jet stream, which this extratropical trough is associated with, is unusually far south right now.

When Sandy moves ashore it will likely form a hybrid storm with properties of both types of storms - thus the 'Frankenstom' label. This type of storm is rare and the computer models are struggling to figure out exactly what will happen. But as Sobel notes in a thorough explanation of this on Climatecentral.org, "this new energy source will enable Sandy to maintain its intensity, or maybe even increase it."

Friday Oct. 26 11 a.m.

Meteorologists are looking at the computer models and are freaking out. They've not seen predictions of barametric pressures dropping this low in these parts of the US in their lifetimes. The NOAA Hydrometeorological Prediction Center Extended Forecast discussion notes that computer models "SHOW PRESSURE SOLUTIONS WELL BEYOND WHAT HAS EVER BEEN OBSERVED NEAR THE NEW JERSEY/NEW YORK COAST (EVEN EXCEEDING THE 1938 LONG ISLAND EXPRESS HURRICANE)."

As the?Capital Weather Gang blog observes:

"The clash of the cold blast from the continental U.S. and the massive surge of warm, moist air from Hurricane Sandy will cause the storm to explode and the pressure to crash.

These historic low pressure levels simulated by the model are equivalent to a category 3 or 4 hurricane, which have peak winds over 115 mph. But Sandy?s winds will not be that high, because as it transitions into this hybrid hurricane-nor?easter monster, its core will unwind. So its peak winds will diminish, but strong winds will be felt over a vast area."

Friday Oct. 26 10:10 am

Remember Snoctober? Last October, just before Halloween, an early snowstorm hit the East Coast and knocked out power to more than 2 million residents from Pennsylvania to New England. Many homes were without power for days and some folks didn't get their electricity back for weeks.?
Well, state governments and private utility companies don't want a repeat of the Snomaggedon of last fall. Utility companies from North Carolina to Vermont are canceling vacations and arranging for power repair crews to come from the Midwest to help out.
AP reports: "A spokesman for Unitil in New Hampshire says the utility is talking to crews as far away as Tennessee and Michigan to make sure they will be available. Alec O' Meara said typically, Unitil talks about reaching to contractors as far as three days in advance of a storm, but the calls are being made sooner than that this time."
The Associated Press reports that Vermont is also warning farmers to prep for Sandy.
"The Vermont Agency of Agriculture is advising farmers to harvest crops still in the fields. For those who need power for milking cows or cooling milk tanks, the agency warns to prepare for power outages by making sure generators are working."

Friday Oct. 26 9 a.m.

Check out Miami-based CBS TV weather forecaster David Bernard's forecast for Sandy on video. He offers a good explanation of why Sandy's northward track will be blocked by a large high pressure area in the Atlantic, pushing it westward toward Delaware. Then, Sandy is likely to encounter a cold front, as the jet stream dips deep into the US South. That collision will could produce 1 to 2 feet of snow in the higher elevations of West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Friday Oct. 26 8:45 a.m.

Where is Sandy headed? It's still too early to say definitively. Here's what the computer model shows which was issued by the National Hurricane Center at 8 a.m. Friday. This track shows Sandy taking a hard left turn toward the East Coast on Monday. It has the eye of the storm hitting Delaware Tuesday at 2 a.m. and heading inland toward Pennsylvania and the Ohio valley.

Hurricane Sandy tears through Bahamas, weakens to Cat. 1

Friday Oct. 26 8 a.m.

Hurricane Sandy passed through the Bahamas early Friday knocking out power but there were no reported deaths. The Associated Press reports a total of 22 fatalities across the Caribbean in Sandy's wake.

"Generally people are realizing it is serious," said Caroline Turnquest, head of the Red Cross in the Bahamas, who said 20 shelters were opened on the main island of New Providence.

Sandy hit the Bahamas as a Category 2 Hurricane, with winds above 105 m.p.h. but weakened to a Category 1 hurricane Thursday night, with sustained winds of 80 m.p.h. Currently forecasters expect Sandy to remain a Cat. 1 hurricane or weaken to a tropical storm as it moves northward.

But meteorologists are warning that it's not just the strength of Sandy that's the issue. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecaster Jim Cisco has warned that? a confluence of weather systems could produce what he has dubbed a "Frankenstorm," arriving along the East Coast of the US with tropical storm-force winds Tuesday. Cisco said that there was a 90 percent chance that most of the U.S. East Coast would get steady gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Wednesday.

?This storm is dangerous,? says Bryan Norcross, a hurricane specialist at the Weather Channel told The Christian Science Monitor. ?If it comes to pass like the consensus forecast, it will be unprecedented, we have never seen anything that looks like this.?

Thursday, Oct. 25 5 p.m. EDT

After battering eastern Cuba, Hurricane Sandy intensify as it crosses the Bahamas today, with its western edge grazing Florida's coast. ?The US National Weather Service warns that Sandy might "help spawn a sprawling storm that could bring significant rain, wind and waves to the Northeast."?

Sandy's exact track is hard to pin down, but meteorologists warn that that it is unlikely to head out to sea, thanks to a storm to its east and an area of high pressure west of Greenland, which together are helping to confine Sandy to the East Coast.

What's more, as Weather Underground notes, Sandy is expected to collide with an eastward-moving dip in the jet stream, creating the potential for a "hybrid" storm with high winds spread over a large area.

At this point, Sandy is expected to make landfall on Monday, somewhere between Virginia and Maine.

To make matters even worse for East Coasters, the storm's land Monday is a full moon, meaning a high tide, which increases the chances of significant coastal flooding. ?

Snowfall is also a concern particularly in the Appalachians. As New Englanders learned last?Halloween, heavy snowfall combined with leafy trees has a tendency to knock down power lines.

N.Y. police officer charged with plan to cook, eat women

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York City police officer was charged on Thursday with conspiring to kidnap, torture, cook and eat women whose names he listed in his computer.

In a criminal complaint unsealed in Manhattan federal court, Gilberto Valle III, 28, of Forest Hills, Queens, was charged with conspiring to cross state lines to kidnap the women and with illegally accessing a federal database.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Investigators uncovered a file on Valle's computer containing the names and pictures of at least 100 women, and the addresses and physical descriptions of some of them, according to the complaint. It said he had undertaken surveillance of some of the women at their places of employment and their homes.

Magistrate Judge Henry Pitman, in denying Valle bail at a hearing on Thursday evening, said: "the allegations in the complaint are profoundly disturbing. I have never seen allegations similar to this in 16 years on the bench."

Valle's court-appointed attorney, Julia Gatto, had vigorously argued to the judge that her client, a 6-1/2 year NYPD veteran who appeared before the judge in a red T-shirt and jeans, was all talk and deserved to be released on bail.

"The best this complaint alleges is talk, just idle talk," Gatto said. "There is no actual crossing the line from fantasy to reality, your honour."

In an excerpt of a July online conversation with an unnamed co-conspirator, Valle is quoted in the complaint as saying:

"I can just show up at her home unannounced. It will not alert her, and I can knock her out, wait until dark and kidnap her right out of her home."

"I was thinking of tying her body onto some kind of apparatus ... cook her over a low heat, keep her alive as long as possible," he said. The woman in question is identified only as "Victim 1."

ONLINE FANTASY GAME?

A Manhattan federal prosecutor, Hadassa Waxman, told the judge on Thursday that Valle was as "close as he could possibly come," short of "kidnapping a woman, drugging her, cooking her and actually eating her."

Federal prosecutors, in announcing the charges, said Valle had created a document called "Abducting and Cooking: A Blueprint." Valle also told an unnamed co-conspirator he would kidnap another woman for $5,000, they said.

"This case is all the more disturbing when you consider Valle's position as a New York City police officer and his sworn duty to serve and protect," Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.

Valle, who an official said had no prior criminal record, was not charged with carrying out any of his suspected plans.

A law enforcement official involved in the investigation characterized Valle's actions as an online "fantasy game."

"He was titillated by it," said the official, who is not authorized to discuss the case publicly. "It looks like he was having these fantasy conversations with people he's talking to in foreign countries."

Valle's attorney, Gatto, agreed. "This was a fantasy, a sexually deviant world where people talk about unreal things," she said.

Valle's estranged wife contacted the FBI after discovering pornography on his computer, according to the law enforcement official, who said the couple is separated. Valle was arrested Wednesday by the FBI. He is due back in court on November7.

A spokesman for the Police Department could not be reached for comment.

Sovereign Silver (colloidal silver) is the ultimate ... - Natural News

(NaturalNews) Every prepper knows about the benefits of colloidal silver. Used topically, colloidal silver kills bacteria, protecting wounds from infection. When taken internally, it accomplishes much the same thing, and I've personally seen it rescue someone from severe food poisoning during a hiking expedition in Peru.

Colloidal silver has, for over 15 years, been a crucial part of my own personal preparedness plan. I've collected silver products from half a dozen companies, plus three colloidal silver generators that I've acquired over the years. The generators, however, tend to create large particle size silver, which is not what you really want for long-term storage or regular use. Small particle size is best, and I've been looking for a colloidal silver manufacturer that could produce VERY small-sized silver.

This has take us several months to pull together, but I'm very happy with what we now stock in the Natural News Store Sovereign Silver Bio-Active Silver Hydrosol at 10ppm, also available as a first aid gel.

The gel is an amazing product. It replaces all those store-bought antiseptic creams like Neosporin or "triple antibiotic ointment," all of which are made with pharmaceutical chemicals. Sovereign Silver gel is not only safer and more natural, it's also a substance that bacteria simply can't become resistant against.

Even better, silver in suspension never expires. (The Sovereign Silver product, technically, is required by law to print a "use by" date on the product.) Colloidal silver simply doesn't degrade with time alone. It lasts essentially forever, making it the ultimate preparedness investment for a lifetime of readiness.

Obviously, in a collapse scenario, all effective medicines will skyrocket in value. Colloidal silver may very well become worth its weight in gold. And as the hospitals run out of antibiotics, the population will be panicked to try to find something that really works against bacteria. This is where colloidal silver (Sovereign Silver) will be seen as a true lifesaving substance of extremely high value.

There are a lot of colloidal silver products on the market today, of course, and many of them are quite good. But Sovereign Silver has the smallest particle size of them all: 0.0008 microns.

A tiny particle size means more surface area and more absorbability. This is why Sovereign Silver is several times more potent than "common" colloidal silver, even while having just 10 ppm of silver. This is a hugely important point to grasp: Higher ppm does not mean a stronger product. In fact, due to the physics of colloidal silver generation, higher ppm actually means larger particle size and lower effective potency. At 10 ppm with 0.0008 micron particle size, Sovereign Silver is not only extremely effective, it's also extremely safe. You can't get "too much silver" drinking this 10 ppm solution unless you literally tried to chug hundreds of gallons of it each year. Technically speaking, you could take a single dose 7 times each day for 70 years and still not reach or exceed the EPA's daily oral Silver Reference Dose (RfD) for lifetime exposure.

Click here to get Sovereign Silver Hydrosol at the Natural News Store.

Another important difference when Sovereign Silver is that it's made with 99.999% (five nines) pure elemental silver and purified water. There are no added silver salts or other compounds. This makes Sovereign Silver extremely safe, simple and pure.

It's also packaged in a glass bottle to prevent any leaching from other containers such as plastic. When you use Sovereign Silver, you're only getting what you want: Extremely small particle size, 10 ppm silver with a long history of safe, effective use.

The silver solution is, itself, free of bacteria. But even if it were contaminated during production, the silver inhibits bacteria growth inside the container, granting the product an essentially unlimited shelf life.

The only things that can degrade colloidal silver in a bottle are strong sunlight and heat, so you do want to store Sovereign Silver in a dark, cool location. As long as you don't expose it to light and heat, silver will store indefinitely, without losing any potency whatsoever.

Topically, colloidal silver is the instant choice for use on minor cuts, scrapes, burns, abrasions and anything that you don't want to get infected. It has been researched for use in burn wards, where it helps prevent the infections that tend to plague burn victims.

Now, obviously, if you have a serious life-threatening injury, get yourself to an emergency room, because western doctors are quite skilled at treating trauma. But for minor cuts, scrapes and even insect bites, colloidal silver is a wonderful first-line defense.

On the ranch in Texas where I raise dairy goats, I've used Sovereign Silver topically to help prevent and eliminate infections in our goats. I would also not hesitate to use it on my dog Roxy if she ever gets into another scrape with a raccoon.

In a preparedness scenario where medicine is hard to come by, colloidal silver can be used in place of almost any antibiotic, both for topical use and internal use. In fact, doctors will be ecstatic to find some colloidal silver once the pharmaceuticals all run out. Maybe this will even open their eyes to the reality that silver is the best replacement for antibiotics on the planet -- a scientific fact that has been mercilessly suppressed by the medical establishment for decades.

Click here to see current prices for Sovereign Silver at the Natural News Store.

A disclaimer for this section: Colloidal silver has not been extensively studied as something to be inhaled. I would consider this an emergency use only, but given the possibility of a global pandemic targeting respiratory organs, this is knowledge that needs to be stated on the record and shared widely in the interests of public safety.

A nebulizer allows you to inhale colloidal silver as a vapor. This obviously delivers colloidal silver directly to your lungs and upper respiratory tract. Given the properties of colloidal silver, this would seem to be a commonsense response to someone at risk, for example, of dying from a bacterial lung infection during a global pandemic outbreak. Remember: Most victims of "swine flu" actually died from bacterial lung infections, not from the influenza, and conventional medicine hospitals have virtually no excess capacity to handle infections stemming from a pandemic outbreak.

I have personally inhaled colloidal silver during a strep throat infection episode, in an effort to eliminate the infection. I can't say whether it really worked or not, because one person is not a clinical trial, but I can say that I felt it was perfectly safe for me to do. And the strep throat infection was gone within 24 hours, in my case.

There are countless stories across the internet about miraculous healing experiences among people who have used colloidal silver both internally and topically. Unfortunately, the medical system is working so hard to suppress scientific research into colloidal silver and prevent knowledge from spreading about it that relatively few scientists research this substance. There's also the for-profit antibiotics industry to protect, because I believe that if the truth about colloidal silver were widely acknowledged, it would wipe most of today's antibiotics industry clean off the map. So don't expect to find medical scientists giving colloidal silver an honest, scientific assessment. They are inherently biased against it due to loyalty to the pharmaceutical industry.

The bottom line on inhaling silver? If I had a family member suffering from an acute infection (in the lungs or otherwise), I would have no hesitation about helping them set up a nebulizer to inhale Sovereign Silver. This would deliver the silver almost directly into the bloodstream while also circulating it throughout the respiratory tract. In my opinion, this could save countless lives during a pandemic outbreak when hospitals are wildly overburdened and actually turning people away to "go home and die."

That's my own personal opinion on the matter, of course. What you choose to do with it is your own business. By the way, we don't sell nebulizers, but if you're looking for a nebulizer for colloidal silver, keep this in mind:

1) You want an ultrasonic nebulizer / inhaler.
2) You do NOT want a steam inhaler, since heat will destroy Sovereign Silver's potency.

Personally, I don't see any reason to take colloidal silver daily. I look at it as an emergency first aid solution, not a daily supplement. I'm aware that some people are taking it daily, but I don't see that as necessary in any way unless you're specifically fighting something or expecting to be exposed to something.

Now, if you're touring in Mexico, Central America or South America, I can understand taking it daily during the tour, just to help protect yourself from all the nasties in the food and water there. That makes good sense, and I always travel with colloidal silver for precisely this reason.

In terms of trace element nutrition, silver is not anywhere near the top of the most important trace elements you need to intake. Selenium and zinc, for example, are far more important in terms of overall health. And if you're looking for sources of trace elements, there are a lot more affordable sources for trace silver than colloidal silver. Himalayan salt, for example, contains trace levels of 80+ elements, including silver. It's a lot less expensive and it also provides trace levels of other elements beyond silver.

Sovereign Silver is available now at the Natural News Store. Also available is the Sovereign Silver First Aid Gel, a fantastic product for topical application.

Predictably, the conventional medical system attacks colloidal silver with ridiculous scare stories that simply aren't true. (They also attack vitamin C, by the way.) Keep in mind that the people who attack colloidal silver are the very same people who openly recommend that you should inject yourself with mercury, formaldehyde, aluminum and monosodium glutamate, all of which are additives the CDC openly admits are still added to vaccines.

So, to use their warped logic, drinking trace amounts of silver is dangerous, but INJECTING yourself with brain-destroying mercury and embalming fluid is perfectly safe!

Obviously, the medical establishment -- which is dominated by criminal drug companies and corrupt government regulators -- has zero credibility when it comes to commenting on nutrition or holistic medicine. Virtually all of Big Pharma's science is completely faked and rigged, including most of the vaccine studies, as we've now learned from Big Pharma whistleblowers.

Colloidal silver cannot be patented, making it the very last thing the drug companies want people to learn about. It's also orders of magnitude safer than prescription medications, which even the medical industry admits kill roughly 100,000 Americans each year. By contrast, there has never been a single death ever attributed to colloidal silver.

Colloidal silver is, without question, among the safest natural supplements ever created. It has a multitude of uses, an almost endless shelf life, and an inherent value in protecting human life, especially in any scenario where conventional medicine is in short supply. Preppers, survivalists and natural medicine enthusiasts are stocking up on colloidal silver right now, knowing full well that this is a potentially lifesaving substance that may play a crucial role in protecting communities from infectious disease during almost any crisis.

New York police officer charged with plan to cook, eat women

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York City police officer was charged on Thursday with conspiring to kidnap, torture, cook and eat women whose names he kept in a list on his computer.

Gilberto Valle III, 28, of Forest Hills, Queens, was arrested on Wednesday by the FBI, a spokesman for the agency said.

In a criminal complaint unsealed on Thursday in Manhattan federal court, Valle was charged with conspiring to cross state lines to kidnap and with illegally accessing a federal database.

The complaint said investigators had uncovered a file on Valle's computer containing the names and pictures of at least 100 women, as well as the addresses and physical descriptions of some of them.

The complaint said that Valle had undertaken surveillance of some of the women at their work and at their home.

In an excerpt of a July conversation with an unnamed co-conspirator, Valle is quoted in the complaint as saying: "I can just show up at her home unannounced, it will not alert her, and I can knock her out, wait until dark and kidnap her right out of her home."

"I was thinking of tying her body onto some kind of apparatus... cook her over a low heat, keep her alive as long as possible." The woman in question is identified only as "Victim 1."

Valle was not charged with carrying out any of the alleged planned attacks, according to the charges, suggesting he was arrested before any of the targeted women were harmed.

A lawyer for Valle could not immediately be identified.

A spokesman for the New York Police Department could not immediately be reached for comment.

Leading LNG Players to Meet at CWC World LNG Summit

The spotlight continues on the LNG market, with increasing supply and demand for gas, potentially indicating that gas demand could outstrip coal by 2030, and get close to demand for oil by 2035.

However, the question still remains ? how will the LNG supply and demand balance look in the next three years, amid new supply projects coming on stream and changing energy policies in importing countries? This question and others will be analysed by LNG professionals around the globe when they meet at the Thirteenth CWC World LNG Summit and Awards Gala Dinner on 27-30 November 2012 in Barcelona.

Through a line-up of renowned international speakers, the Summit offers participants the chance to hear about the future of LNG supply and demand from companies including: Anadarko, Angola LNG, Sonatrach, Repsol, Stream, Petrobras, Shell, Mitsubishi, BG Group, GAIL, Tokyo Gas, Panama Canal Authority, Klaipedos Nafta, GasAtacama, Chevron and many more.

The Summit also offers strategic networking opportunities in an exclusive environment, with the key decision makers coming together over four days to build relationships and close their deals before the end of the year.

This year sees the 8th edition of the prestigious LNG Awards Gala Dinner hosted at the stunning Castell de Sant Marcal, where delegates will find out who has won the three highly anticipated awards: the LNG Technological Innovation Award, the LNG Executive of 2012 Award and the highly regarded CWC / WGI Annual LNG Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Industry.

Plus invaluable networking at the BG Group hosted Welcome drinks, the Repsol and STREAM hosted informal drinks party as well as various luncheons and coffee breaks sponsored by Rasgas, Angola LNG and Union Fenosa Gas.

ACC Football 2012: Atlantic Division Or Coastal Division?

Boston College is 0-4 in the ACC for the second straight year. So let's talk about something that TOTALLY matters -- like ACC divisional schwartz comparisons.

Jeff: In years past, the ACC's Coastal Division has been considered the better division in the conference. The winner of the Coastal Division has won all but 3 ACC Championship Games and Virginia Tech has been a fixture in the top 25 with Georgia Tech making some regular appearance and North Carolina and Miami popping in and out. This year though, there are no Coastal teams in the top 25. Meanwhile, the Atlantic has Clemson and Florida State who shouldn't budge from the top 25 as the season plays out and NC State figures to be the next most likely ACC team to crack the top 25. The records tell the same story as the Atlantic Division is 3 games over .500 against the Coastal and BC is the only team in the Atlantic with a losing record. This year, how much better is the Atlantic than the Coastal?

Brian: The answer appears pretty straightforward this year but I don't think it's all that obvious. Like you said, the two best teams in the ACC sit atop the Atlantic Division in Florida State and Clemson. However, outside of FSU and Clemson, I don't think any other Atlantic Division team is better than the best Coastal Division team, which appears to be North Carolina at the moment. I say North Carolina is the best in the Coastal, despite the Heels' loss to Duke and earlier loss to Wake Forest. Carolina has already knocked off Miami and Virginia Tech, the next two best teams in the division.

After Carolina, I think N.C. State is slightly better than both Virginia Tech and Miami. But after that, the bottom falls out for the Atlantic Division -- and fairly significantly.

Georgia Tech is a better team right now than Maryland, Wake Forest and (obviously) Boston College. So is Duke for that matter. That leaves Virginia, which has been every bit as bad as Boston College this year but with a much easier schedule. Chances are good that UVa might not win another game this season, which is more than we can say about BC -- with winnable games left vs. Maryland (this weekend) and at Wake Forest.

Let's say BC and Virginia are a wash. FSU and Clemson are well above anyone from the Coastal, and the Coastal Division's best team at the moment is ineligible to play in the Championship Game. The Coastal Division is stronger in the middle, but I'm not sure that makes up for the lack of Top 25 teams and all the losses that have piled up already this season.

The Atlantic Division does have a slight edge at the moment, but I think it's closer than people think. The Sagarin rankings seem to bear out this trend, with the average Sagarin ranking of 60 in the Atlantic and 63 in the Coastal.

A good barometer will be this weekend, where N.C. State goes to North Carolina. As much as a bowl eligible Duke team is a feel-good story in the conference this year, the Blue Devils do go into this weekend's game against Florida State as a 27.5 point road dog. It's very possible that Duke winds up finishing with a losing record in conference play with games left at Florida State, Clemson, at Georgia Tech and Miami.

Rams arrive in London for game against Pats

Updated: October 23, 2012, 2:58 PM ET

Associated Press

LONDON -- Things are moving quickly for Sam Bradford and the St. Louis Rams as they deal with a change of continents and time zones.

?

LAST NAME They have a great appreciation for soccer. In America, it's the fifth or sixth biggest sport. Here it's awesome, they love it. I feel at home.

? -- Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein

Now their bodies just have to catch up in time for the annual NFL game in London on Sunday against the New England Patriots.

The Rams (3-4) arrived at Heathrow airport early Tuesday morning, and a few hours later they were on a wet field in Regent's Park in central London doing drills with local school children to show off the American version of football.

Not much time for resting up so far for the NFL's latest ambassadors to Europe.

"I can hardly believe we're here in London," Bradford said between drills. "Probably less than 12 hours ago we were back in St. Louis in a team meeting. ... I think everyone was a little bit tired on the bus ride here, but that's why we got here so early in the week so that we could acclimate ourselves to the jet lag and get accustomed to the time difference. So hopefully by Sunday it'll be a non-factor."

The Rams are hosting the Patriots at Wembley Stadium in the sixth regular-season game played in Britain. The Patriots, who also played at Wembley in 2009, are practicing at home this week before arriving on Friday.

As the home team, Bradford said the Rams are also taking their ambassadorial duties seriously and want to have a visible presence in London to help boost the game's popularity. That's why the players only spent about an hour at their luxury resort outside the city before hopping on a bus to Regent's Park to spend the afternoon with a couple of hundred school children running passing drills and other exercises. The event was part of the NFL's Play 60 program, which is aimed at encouraging children to do something active for at least 60 minutes a day.

"I think it would be really easy for us to come over here and lock ourselves up at the hotel and just go through our normal routines," Bradford said. "But I think this is a great chance for the NFL to expand their game beyond the states. And for us to be able to come out here and share our game with some of the local youth, I think it's a great opportunity for us."

But while the NFL has enjoyed continually increased popularity in Britain since its first regular-season game here in 2007, it was soon clear to the Rams players that this is still the land of soccer.

"They just kick them," backup quarterback Kellen Clemens told Bradford laughingly after a group of kids finished a passing drill by gleefully kicking away their footballs before moving on to the next exercise. "The kids are going, `What kind of football is this? We didn't use our feet one time."

Of course, the British love of soccer is just an added bonus for kicker Greg Zuerlein.

The rookie has quickly become a household name among NFL fans in the States after a spectacular start to the season, but is hoping the kicking game will get even more attention in Europe.

"They have a great appreciation for soccer," said Zuerlein, who grew up playing the sport. "In America, it's the fifth or sixth biggest sport. Here it's awesome, they love it. I feel at home."

Like most of his teammates, though, he had yet to find his bearings in the British capital.

"I don't even know what this place is, is it a park?" Zuerlein said, looking around the sprawling fields inside a Regent's Park that was covered in a fog so thick it made it impossible to even see any of the surrounding buildings. "My only time seeing the city was on the drive here."

The Rams have a close connection to British soccer, as owner Stan Kroenke is also the majority shareholder of Arsenal. St. Louis will be practicing at Arsenal's training facilities in Colney on Wednesday and Thursday, and there are plans for some players to attend the London club's Premier League game against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

"I'm a huge fan," cornerback Cortland Finnegan said. "I'm like a kid in a candy store. I can't wait to get there (to Colney)."

Other players felt the same way about Wembley, arguably the most famous venue in soccer. For linebacker James Laurinaitis, playing there will even continue a family tradition.

"My father was a professional wrestler, and he wrestled at Wembley, the old Wembley," Laurinaitis said. "So to be able to be a father-son duo, to be in the same spot, is pretty exciting to me. I used to watch that SummerSlam on VHS over and over growing up, that was pretty exciting. So to be able to be in that stadium, and with the Olympics just being here and everything, it's going to be pretty cool."

Judging by responses from the school kids, though, Laurinaitis may not get as much attention as Zuerlein by the Wembley crowd.

"They ask you what position you are, you say `linebacker,' and they say `I have no idea what that is," Laurinaitis said. "But they're learning, and hopefully it just draws their attention to the game on Sunday and they watch. And maybe we get a couple of more fans out of it."

Accounting News Roundup: Romney's "Big Idea"; Why Big 4 Audits ...

    Romney's Tax Deduction Cap [WSJ]
[D]etails aside, the tax cap is a big idea, and potentially a very good one. The proposal makes economic sense to the extent that it helps to pay for lower marginal tax rates. Lower rates with fewer deductions improve the incentive for investing and taking risks based on the best return on capital rather than favoring one kind of investment (say, housing) over another. This would help economic growth. The idea may be even better politically. The historic challenge for tax reformers is defeating the most powerful lobbies in Washington that exist to preserve their special tax privileges. Among the biggest is the housing lobby that exists to preserve the mortgage-interest deduction?the Realtors, home builders, mortgage brokers and the whole Fannie Mae gang.?But don't forget the life insurance lobby (which benefits from the tax exclusion on the equity buildup in policies), the tax-free municipal bond interest lobby, the charitable deduction lobby and more. Each one will fight to the death to preserve its carve-out, which means that reformers have to engage in political trench warfare to succeed.?This is one reason President Obama wants Mr. Romney to be more specific: The minute he proposed to limit the mortgage-interest deduction, the housing lobby would do the Obama campaign's bidding by running ads against Mr. Romney's plan. Mr. Romney is right not to fall for this sucker play.

Late Hasselback TD lifts Titans at Buffalo 35-34

    By JOHN WAWROW

    AP Sports Writer

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 3:58 p.m. ET Oct. 21, 2012

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Matt Hasselbeck has another fourth-quarter comeback victory, and Chris Johnson finally enjoyed the breakout game he's been seeking all season.

Hasselbeck hit Nate Washington for a 15-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 1:03 left in a wild and wacky 35-34 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

And in a game dominated by offense, it was the Titans defense that set up the decisive drive with cornerback Jason McCourty intercepting Ryan Fitzpatrick's pass at midfield with under 3 minutes left.

Hasselbeck secured the win with the Titans facing fourth-and-9 by dropping a pass just over the shoulder of Washington, who had a step on Justin Rogers in the end zone. It was Hasselbeck's 22nd fourth-quarter comeback win and second in consecutive weeks after he rallied the Titans to a 26-23 win over Pittsburgh on Oct. 11.

The Titans (3-4) have now won two straight with Hasselbeck replacing injured starter Jake Locker and won their first road game after three consecutive losses.

The Bills (3-4) have lost three of their past four while stumbling into their bye week.

Johnson led the charge with 195 yards rushing and two scores. He came into the game with 301 yards rushing and no scores, and continued his domination of the Bills. In three games against Buffalo, he's combined for 480 yards rushing and six touchdowns.

Titans backup running back Jamie Harper also scored twice, both on 1-yard plunges.

Fitzpatrick finished 27 of 35 for 225 yards and three scores, but turned the ball over twice, including a lost fumble.

The Bills final drive sputtered with Fitzpatrick failing to produce a first down. It ended with Fitzpatrick throwing behind Stevie Johnson on fourth-and-2.

Both of Fitzpatrick's turnovers led to Titans touchdowns. Fitzpatrick had given the Bills their first and only lead with 5 seconds left in the third quarter, when he hit Johnson for a 27-yard touchdown pass.

Buffalo's defense then responded by stopping the Titans on each of their next two possessions, including Bryan Scott breaking up a pass intended for Jared Cook to stop the Titans on fourth-and-5 with under 4 minutes left.

The Bills took over at their own 36, with Fitzpatrick's interception coming while trying to thread a pass to Donald Jones on third-and-7.

Fred Jackson had 71 yards rushing and 49 yards receiving and a touchdown. Brad Smith scored on an 89-yard kickoff return and Donald Jones also scored on a 15-yard pass.

The game started off like a track meet with two of the NFL's most porous defenses unable to stop the offenses. The first-half ended with the Titans up 21-20. The teams combined for 474 yards (the Titans had 260), 25 first downs (the Bills had 13) and produced scores on all but one possession. Tennessee was stopped at the Buffalo 44 on its fourth possession.

The scoring came so fast, there were three touchdowns in a span of 30 seconds. It's a stretch that began with Fitzpatrick hitting Jackson for a 3-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7. The Titans scored on their first play from scrimmage on Johnson's 83-yard run. And the Bills responded with Smith's 89-yard kickoff return.

It was the shortest three-score span since the Raiders and Patriots scored three times in 26 seconds on Dec. 14, 2008, according to STATS LLC.

    Best Practices in Password Management

Organizations should implement strict password policies to secure critical data. Non authorized users can gain access to protected data through many ways. It is easy to 'stumble upon' a password if it is weak. You should have a password that is hard to be cracked and easy to remember. There are tools like Windows password reset tool and other recovery solutions to help in case you forget your password.

    Train and educate users

Train users on ways to create a strong password. Advise them on how different characters can be made use of in a password. They should be aware that passwords should not be written down on a piece of paper or on monitor (if there are exceptions, the list or the copy should be stored in a locked drawer or safe). Direct them against sharing passwords with co- workers. In case they forget their passwords, recovery and reset tools like Windows password reset tool can be made use of.

For many accounts, using the same password is to be steered away from. Sharing accounts is also to be avoided. Passwords can be guessed by software and humans. Make the users aware of different threats like dictionary attacks, brute force, word substitution attacks etc.

    Password policy

Password policy should be made known to all the users.

? Maximum password age should be mentioned to the users. If it is required that you change the password periodically for security purposes, communicate the maximum number of days the password can be used, so that it can be changed on time.

? Users should be aware that there are certain number of unique passwords to be used before any of them can be reused. It is typically twenty five passwords. On windows, you can go for the option 'enforce password history' in order for the system to display the passwords already made use of.

? Minimum password length should be made known. It is usually eight characters long. This is to ensure that there are no blank passwords created by employees. Long passwords are known to be stronger than the short ones.

? Users should be taught how to modify or change a password when required.

    Password retrieval and reset

Even though you follow all the right rules, there is always a risk of forgetting the password. In case of losing a password, you can use Windows password reset tool or others to retrieve or reset it. The software can be loaded into an external storage device through which the system can be booted to recover the password.

There are simple memory tricks to remember a password. For instance, you can type the letters that are one line up or down in the key boards to substitute the letter sequence that actually makes a sensible word. Also, account lockout threshold, i.e., the number of times a password can be attempted, should be applied carefully keeping into consideration all the elements that can affect it.

Follow good practices in password management to make password systems strong across an organization. They should be also followed in order to avoid external threats to encrypted data. You can save a lot of money by improving your IT infrastructure (by including tools like Windows password reset tool), updating to new technology and protecting key data.

What Japan's Lost Decade Meant For Youth Employment - Business ...

In the mid and late 90s, Japan experienced a deep recession that was?mainly rooted in a?collapse of land and property prices and the aftermath of sovereign debt crises in other East Asian countries.

Riva Fromovich?points us to a 2000 study by The University of Tokyo's Yuji Genda of what happened to Japanese youth during the recession. It is ugly.

First, the hiring rate of new graduates relative to the initial number of employees, using?human resource stock variables?as explanatory variables in a regression?analysis:

    Genda:

The hiring rate of new graduates relative to the initial number of employees?is signi?cantly lower at establishments with a higher share of employees aged?forty-?ve or older. In particular, high school graduates had greater di?culty??nding full-time jobs in large establishments with a higher share of older employees. There were also fewer college graduates recruited by these establishments. Those with nonscienti?c majors (bunkei in Japanese) were least likely?to be hired. The regression model can be applied to data from 1991 to 1996,?and the negative and signi?cant coe?cient on the middle-aged and older employee ratio is observed in every year.?

?Next, job growth rates (declines) per capita by age ? they basically collapsed for young folks:

Finally, job growth rates by age and sector. The drop off for younger workers is especially noticeable at large firms:

The reason for these results are somewhat unique to Japan: the country boasts the toughest separation laws among OECD nations; in most cases employers have?a judiciary duty either to verify just cause for dismissals or to attempt alternative measures to avoid them.

This makes it harder to get rid of older employees and easier to not hire young people.

But it was mostly the effect of basic plunging labor demand caused by total GDP declining 25 percent.

Genda's conclusion about what this would mean for Japan is pretty scary:

An increase in youth joblessness may cause social problems in Japan.?The youth crime rate is closely linked to labor market conditions (Ohtake?and Okamura 2000). The failure to transfer skills from older generations?to younger generations might seriously a?ect future productivity in the?Japanese economy.

Youth unemployment?has reached 16.8% in the US.

The Japan experience has an ominous lesson for the US. Politicians love to talk about ensuring the economy is strong for future generations, but when they do, they're usually talking about the national debt, and how we need to lower it.

But the killer for youth is lack of growth. Slowing the economy through austerity is the exact opposite thing that should be done for future generations.

The Starbucks barista reportedly left her apartment for work at about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday on a drive that typically takes less than five minutes.?

Her husband, Clint, called police roughly three hours later. He told investigators he tried to reach Whitney multiple times after her boss alerted him that she never arrived for her 7 a.m. shift.?

Police said Heichel's ATM card was used at a nearby Troutdale gas station at 9:14 a.m. Tuesday. Two hours later, her sport utility vehicle was found in a Wal-Mart parking lot with the passenger side window smashed.?

Jim Vaughn, a family spokesman, addressed the Friday night news conference, thanking police for their commitment in the case.?

"Really, words can't begin to express the sadness that our families are experiencing tonight," Vaughn said.?

"Whitney was a very loving person," he added. "She was warm, she was kind, she was everything you would want in a friend, relative, spiritual fellow worshipper."?

He asked for privacy for the family, saying "our loss and heartache is too much to bear right now."?
    Police took no questions.?

Banks set to cut interest rates

Amid intense pressure from the public and BoU, banks finally budge on interest rates

For about a year, the prayer of John Kasimoni, a general merchandise wholesaler in Kikuubo market, has been having the interest rate on a variable bank loan he obtained from a bank reduced.

It all started when Kasimoni walked into a bank and obtained a three-year loan of Shs 100 million from the bank in June last year to recapitalise his business.

At the original interest rate of 25%, he was supposed to pay monthly installments of Shs about Shs 4 million per month for 36 months.? Over the 36 months, he would have to pay back interest equivalent to more than Shs 44 million.

    ?

But on November 1, 2011, Kasimoni received a letter from the bank informing him that the bank had increased its prime lending rate to 28.5%, and his monthly installments had automatically grown to more than Shs 4.5 million per month effective immediately. This meant an increase of Shs 530,000 on his monthly installments.? This was money he had to fork out from his capital. He almost lost his house - which he had staked as security for the loan - to the bank.

?I didn?t know there was such a condition in the loan contract or I wouldn?t have taken it,? Kasimoni said bitterly, adding that he has not thought of going back to any bank for a loan.

For now, Kasimoni is barely managing to pay off the old loan and still feels petrified when one mentions going back for another loan. ?I wouldn?t go back to banks for loans. I really fear,? he said.

    Traders? protests

Early this year, traders under their umbrella body Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) staged a three-day strike and shutdown shops protesting the spike in interest rates which saw most of them lose property and close business.

Some commercial banks hiked interest rates to over 30% from as low as 15% in the first quarter of 2011. The hike was influenced by increases in the central bank?s central bank rate which touched highs of 23% from 13%. The rate increment was aimed at fighting inflation which peaked at 30.4% in October last year, the highest since 1993.

According to the Bank of Uganda commercial banks weighted average rates jumped to 26.9% in July 2012 from 21.7% in July 2011. Not surprisingly, commercial banks registered some of their biggest profits ever in the last financial year.

There is hope that traders? prayers could be been answered with most commercial banks announcing some cuts in their bank lending rates in response to the recent reduction in the central bank rate to 13%, the level it was at in July last year before inflation spiked.

For instance, KCB reduced its interest rates from 26% to 24%, Ecobank reduced to 25% from 26%, Stanchart is now at 21%, Centenary Bank is at 22% down from 23% while Stanbic will cut to 21% from 26%. Dfcu and Crane Bank stand at 25%.

In an interview with The Independent on Oct. 12 Everest Kayondo, the KACITA chairman, said:? ?We are a bit relieved with the interest rate cuts but we are not yet there,?, adding that loans were still expensive for borrowers.

He argued that in July last year when the CBR was at 13% most banks had their base lending rates below 20%. Today, the CBR is back at 13% and no bank has lowered their base lending rates below 20%.

Kayondo feels the pain for his members who lost property to banks and closed business because of the ?unmanageable? hikes in interest rates.

?That we will live to remember,? he said, adding that to avoid a repeat of such pain, he insists on government coming up with a policy forcing banks to cut interest rates in line with the central bank?s CBR ?even if we are in a liberalised economy.?

Even Members of Parliament on the National Economy are pushing for a similar move. They are urging the Finance minister to push for the amendment to the Financial Institutions Act 2004 so that the central bank can have a say on how much commercial banks charge on loans once economic conditions change.

Isaac Nkote, senior lecture of Finance at Makerere University Business School, told The Independent on Oct. 13 that it is very hard to regulate banks? interest rates when they operate in a liberalised economy since many had different ways of determining interest rates say the degree of risk and the type of borrower.

?Setting new interest rates by a bank is a management issue and it takes some time,? he said, adding that banks would always reduce interest rates when they expect good market conditions in a period of six months.

Nkote said even amidst high interest rates ?serious? borrowers would always borrow. ?It depends on the business one does and the bank they are dealing with.?

Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, the central bank governor, has on several occasions publicly admitted that he could not force commercial banks to reduce interest rates because he does not have that mandate.

?But for the interest of the business community and the economy, legislators should look into that,? Kayondo said.

Mutebile cut the CBR by two percentage points to 13% in October down from 15% in September due to the disinflationary momentum reported by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics. The bureau reported on Sept. 28 that annual headline and core inflation fell sharply to 5.4% and 4.8% respectively in September from 11.9% and 11.4% in August driven by sharp falls in food prices and other falls in the other components in the inflation basket.

BoU?s most recent CBR cut brought the cumulative fall in the rate, since February this year to 10 percentage points.? The rate cut, according to Mutebile was expected to influence commercial banks to reduce their interest rates charged on loans.

?However the reduction in the CBR has not been passed on fully to commercial banks? lending rates,? Mutebile complained. ?I hope that in October, we will see a significant reduction in bank lending rates for all borrowers,? he added.

But the governor said he expected no further cuts in the CBR since inflation had fallen back to where it was last year in Q1.

But Philip Odera, the chairperson of the Uganda Bankers Association and managing director of Stanbic Bank, the largest bank in terms of market share and asset base, was optimistic.

?Banks will continue to reduce their interest rates as long as there is enough and cheap liquidity in the market,? Odera told The Independent on Sept. 12, adding that the central bank had just cut the CBR something that he said needs some time to have the cost of funding in the market falling and ?for commercial banks to assess the future.?

    Wise borrowers

Odera, whose bank has announced a cut in its base lending rate to 21% effective Nov. 1 down from a high of 29% a few months ago, said the bank currently welcomes customers who are not ?rushing? to take up loan products but those who are demanding for broad knowledge on how to borrow from the bank and ?use the money wisely? and make profits out of their business.

?We want your business to grow so that we can also grow,? he said.

He said they are now encouraging borrowers to access loan products in groups so that it becomes easy for them to payback. Those could be workers of a particular company or farmers attached to an organisation or private company which they supply with agricultural output.

Like Odera, A.R Kalan, Crane Bank?s managing director, said they were happy to see inflation in single digits and the central bank reducing the CBR. Kalan promised to cut their base lending rates, which stood at 26% further as market conditions continue to be favorable.

The business community and the public might have the view that commercial banks are out to exploit them and maximize profits but Odera urged the public not to see banks that way. He said banks are contributors to economic growth through financing productive sectors.

?We are all working towards having our economy growing,? he said.

But with the economic growth slowing down due to lower productivity as a result of lack of credit, many will continue to doubt Odera?s assertions. For instance, Uganda?s economy grew at 3.2% in the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2012 down from 6.7% expansion in the year earlier. However, there is optimism that the next 12 months will be better as productive sectors get the necessary boost to enable the economy to grow at the desired level of about 7% per annum.

But for now, all that people like Kasimoni are thinking about is having the interest rate on their loans go down. If for instance, Kasimoni?s bank effected the reduction to 21%, he will pay back at most Shs 3.3 million per month, Shs 700,000 less than the smallest amount he ever paid back and about Shs 1 million lower than the highest amount he ever paid.?? How long the banks will have to wait to accept to make this kind of ?loss? is what remains to be seen.
